Do players need to install anything?

No. The television and every phone open CastPlayTV in a normal web browser. Guests scan the code or type it. There is no app-store step, and nobody has to create an account before sitting down.

Do we all need the same Wi-Fi?

Same-room play is steadier when the television and the phones share a network. Guest Wi-Fi that isolates devices is the usual reason a scan fails. Move the phones onto the main network, or type the code under the QR. The same box accepts a screen code or a room code. Friends elsewhere can still join over the internet with a room code.

What if the TV browser feels slow?

Host from a laptop and send the picture to the television with an HDMI cable. Phones join the same room either way. Older built-in browsers are the usual weak point, not the phones in people’s hands.

Can someone join from another city?

Yes. Send the room code. They do not have to be on your Wi-Fi. On several titles the board and the controls can live together on one phone, tablet, or computer, so a remote friend is not stuck mirroring a television. The remote-play guide lists which games support that.

Is it actually free to start a room?

You can open a room and play without paying or creating an account. Bring the screen you already own and the phones already in the room. That is the whole requirement.

Do we scan again for the next game?

No. Phones stay paired to the TV when a game ends. From a paired phone, go back to the screen menu and open the next game. Names are remembered. End the night only when you are actually done, and that is when the screen code closes.

Two play modes, one platform

Living-room mode: one Main screen (often a Smart TV) shows the shared board; each player uses a phone as a controller. This is best when everyone can see the same TV.

Own-screen mode: each remote player gets the board and controls on their phone, tablet, or computer. Use it when people are in different homes or when a player only has one device.

You can mix contexts across a friend group depending on the game: couch players on Main screen + phones, remote players on own-screen where supported — always verify the title’s options on its game page.

How to start an own-screen room

Open the Player path On your phone, tablet, or computer go to castplaytv.com and choose Player (or open /play).
Choose own-screen where offered Select Player with own screen when creating or joining a supported game so the board appears on your device.
Share the room code Send the code as text. Friends join from their own devices. You do not need to stream your screen to them.

Remote play etiquette that prevents rage-quits

Agree who recreates the room if someone drops. Paste the new code in chat immediately. Keep a backup voice call for table talk — especially for Freehold trades and DoodleDash hints arguments.

Latency varies by home internet. Turn-based titles tolerate spikes better than twitch racing. Pick the genre for the network you have.
